CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I knew Magorian had followed me only because of the heavy thud of his feet. I reached the low fence surrounding the property, slapped my hand on the post and threw my legs over, then kept running.

The sound of fighting grew more distinct. I heard blows and the heavy gasping exhalation of the recipient.

“Getta ‘old of ‘er for crissake, will ya?” came the demand, from someone seriously out of breath.

I could see the shift of shadows among the trees, not too far in from the fence. I angled my run toward them, but stopped at an oak tree, and put my hand on it. “If you would be so kind…I have to help whoever is being attacked, in there. Could I have two branches.” I held up my thumb. “As thick as this.” I spread my hand and pressed the finger and thumb of the other hand on either side of my palm. “And this wide.”

I kept my gaze lifted up toward the canopy, while Magorian thudded past me. He didn’t have his staff, either, but he did have the Tarot cards in his hand. I’d seen him use them—they were just as lethal as the staff.

A branch cracked, overhead. A second one. Two branches, the thickness of my thumb, tumbled down the side of the oak. I stepped out of the way, and the two branches fell at my feet. Both were smooth and green at the base, but about four inches above the ends where they had cracked off the tree, the wood turned brittle and dry. I held the smooth green branches and broke off the dried off ends. Both were more than adequate replacements for bo sticks.

“Thank you,” I told the oak, then ran after Magorian.

Fifteen seconds later I burst out of the trees into one of the little clearings that naturally formed. There was blue sky above, and sweet, short grasses underfoot.

Six men were attacking Jamie, all of them dressed in dark clothing. One of them, she had already brought down in some fashion. He lay clutching his stomach. Another was trying to herd her up against a tree, with two more coming in on either side of her.

She had her hands up in a defensive position, and her expression was determined and thoughtful, with no hint of panic. But her face was very white—almost translucent. She barely glowed at all.

Magorian threw out his left hand, pointing at the flank man. The flank man was for me, while Magorian threw himself at the taller one who was trying to herd Jamie.

I veered to the left as the point man fell heavily to the grass, with Magorian on his back. My man grinned as I came at him. He hadn’t noticed the sticks curled up inside my fists. Most didn’t.

I had the element of surprise on my side and dealt with him quickly as a result. A tap to the nerve center in his shoulder, then the side of his knee, and finally, his temple. He dropped as heavily as his companion.
